Feeding Raw Pet Food Safely at Home

Treat raw pet food like any raw meat in your kitchen:

  • Store in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge in a leak-proof container.
  • Wash hands, surfaces, and bowls thoroughly with hot soapy water.
  • Feed in a designated area and clean up spills immediately.
  • Never refreeze thawed food.
  • Separate pet prep tools from human kitchenware.

We include detailed safety instructions with every Wylie Nourished purchase.

Feeding Guidelines for Raw Diets

How Much Raw Food Should Your Pet Eat?

Every pet is unique, but general feeding guidelines by body weight are:

Feed percentage of body weight by life stage
Life Stage Feed % of Body Weight
Puppy (2–6 months) 6–8%
Puppy (6–12 months) 4–5%
Adult (active) 2–3%
Senior (less active) 1.5–2.5%

Factor in treats: Over 10% of daily calories as treats can unbalance meals. Remember to factor in treats into your dog’s daily calorie allowance and bear in mind that treats should not be any more than 10% of the total daily requirement.

Enrichment feeding is a great way to serve your pets’ daily allowance, not just for extending feeding time but for mental stimulation and fun.

Understanding Raw Pet Food Labels

Want to know how to read pet food ingredients like a pro? Not all pet foods are created equal. We help you decode the label:

  • “As Fed” vs “Dry Matter”: Always compare foods by dry matter to get a true read on protein and fat content.
  • Complete vs Complementary: “Complete” means the food meets daily requirements; “Complementary” foods are designed to be fed alongside other sources.
  • The Carb Trap: Many dry pet foods contain 40–60% carbohydrates, which aren’t essential for dogs or cats.

Our team is happy to help guide you toward the right diet during your next nutrition consultation.

Tips, Tricks & Recycling

Make Feeding Raw Easier & More Sustainable

All of our Wylie Nourished packaging is fully recyclable. Simply give it a quick clean and dispose of it with your household recycling.

We’ve even found the perfect-sized container to store your 1kg open sausage, ideal for keeping it fresh in the fridge and using over a 3 to 4 day period.

For an extra boost of Omega oils to support your pet’s skin and coat, why not add a Wylie Nourished sprat to their meal? They also make a delicious treat on their own! Available in convenient 1kg and 100g bags.
